Ozone 101
What is ozone?
Ozone (O3) is created when ordinary oxygen molecules (O2) are charged with electricity. Ozone is often found in nature during lighting strikes and near waterfalls.
The fresh smell we notice before and after a heavy rainfall is ozone, created when lightning strikes during a storm.
How is Ozone Created?
1. Electrical energy added to oxygen molecules.
2. Oxygen molecules split into two O atoms.
3. O atoms join with other O₂ molecules to form O₃.
An oxygen molecule is made up of two oxygen atoms (02). When oxygen molecules are subjected to a high electric voltage, some molecules split into two oxygen atoms (O). These atoms (O) then join with other oxygen molecules (02) to form ozone (03).
Ozonation
is the process of treating water by infusing it with ozone,
thus generating ozonated water.
How Do We Know it Works?
One of the many uses of ozone is keeping food and flowers fresh. One bouquet of flowers was soaked in tap water, the other in ozonated water. The results speak for themselves!
